What is a diet?
Often times when we hear the word ‘diet’ we think of cutting down our meals, or skipping them entirely for a few weeks. This is linked to the idea of losing weight, as well as a solution to staying fit.
Truth is a diet is a set of food we regularly eat. This could be whatever we want, or whatever is available at a given meal time. But have you ever thought of what you should be eating, and what is in them that makes them so healthy?
Maybe while you were in school, you’ve heard of the three basic food groups. There’s go food for energy, grow food for, well- growing, and then there’s the glow food that’s supposed to keep you healthy. They taught us should always have these three food groups in every meal, but nutrition and dieting are more than just that.
According to the CDC, avoid food that has high amounts of added sugars, sodium, saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol. A healthy diet must have fruits, vegetables, whole grain, fat-free or low-fat milk, and milk products. These should also contain protein foods, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds.
Here are some tips to get you started:
When it comes to fruit, it is always a good idea to buy a fresh one from the market. Don’t stick to the same kinds of fruits, either. There are so many kinds that go in and out of season with an abundance of nutrients from each of them. If they’re not in season, try a different variety. Frozen or canned are a great way to go. Do keep in mind that canned fruits might have some added sugars and syrups. Choose canned fruits packed in water or the fruits’ juice.
A lot of people like meat, but if you want to make them
healthier change the way you prepare them. Instead of frying, try baking or
grilling. Try new, low-calorie recipes online or on magazines. If you want to
try not eating meat, but not miss out on their nutritional value, try dried
beans instead.
Now, after all this you might think you’d have to abandon cake and chocolate and that second cookies and cream smoothie of the day you love so much. Well, not entirely. Have them once in a while, balanced with physical activities and healthier meals. Maybe once or twice a week at first, then cut it back to once a month. Have them in smaller amounts, and try low-calorie versions.
All in all, in order to start a healthy diet, you have to be
wary of what you eat. Choose healthy meal options, or try healthier varieties
of the ones you already love. Explore new fruits and vegetables in place of
your snacks and side dishes, and cut back on your favorite pleasure foods. If
you want change, you have to make the change, so if you want to be healthy
start eating healthy.
